University enrollment remains stable
Enrollment for the fall semester at the Franciscan University of Steubenville is expected to stay at slightly less than 2,500 students.
That news was announced this week by David Skiviat, vice president of finance for the university, during the July meeting of the Community Improvement Corporation Board of Trustees. The CIC board held its meeting on the campus.
Skiviat, who also serves as vice president of the CIC board, noted with the university’s purchase of the former Parkview Circle public housing complex, now called Assisi Heights, the university will be able to accommodate 189 additional on-campus resident students. He said a total of 1,400 students now can reside on the campus.
He also noted the university will make available more than $1 million in commuter grants for local students this coming school year.
Census Bureau will open Toronto office
The U.S. Census Bureau will be opening an office in Toronto in October to oversee census operations in the counties along the Ohio River.
Cynthia King, Southern Ohio partnership specialist with the bureau, made that announcement during this week’s CIC board meeting. King provided CIC trustees with an overview of the need for Jefferson County to have a complete count. The local census theme will be: Be Jefferson County Proud, Be Counted!
“Our goal is that by March, you can’t go a block in Jefferson County without hearing about the census,” she said. “The 2010 Census form will include just 10 questions and will take less than 10 minutes to complete.”
