JCC, Apex join forces to land grant

Jefferson Community College and the Apex Landfill Wednesday announced they were selected to receive a $20,000 Targeted Industry Grant to provide training for employees who work at the sanitary landfill in the county.

The Ohio Board of Regents grant provided by the state was obtained through a partnership between Apex and JCC’s Department of Workforce Outreach. The grant will be matched by 25 percent private funds provided by Apex to create and implement training programs to increase efficiencies and maintain safety at its landfill operations.

“We are pleased to be teaming with JCC to provide advanced education that will inspire and encourage our employees to work safer and smarter,” said Ross M. Patten, a spokesperson for Apex.

Tracee Joltes of JCC noted “reinforcing the importance of employee training and safety as an integral organization value will support Apex in its efforts to build cohesion at all management levels and to become a preferred employer in the community.”

CIC board will meet at the Fort Tuesday

The Community Improvement Corporation Board of Trustees will meet Tuesday at the Historic Fort Steuben, located on South Third Street in downtown Steubenville. The city of Steubenville is hosting the August meeting, set to begin at 3:30 p.m.

Mayor Domenick Mucci will welcome to the board to the Fort before introducing Jerry Barilla, chairman of the Fort board, for brief remarks. In addition, Allen Kukovich, executive director of the Regional Visioning Project, will address the group.

The Regional Visioning Project, known as the Power of 32, was launched in May of this year. It is a two-year process designed to provide an opportunity for every resident of the 32-county, four-state region located around Pittsburgh to participate in creating a shared vision for the region’s best future.

Progress Alliance welcomes new trustees

Since the beginning of 2009, several new trustees have joined the Community Improvement Corporation Board of Trustees, the parent group, so to speak, of Progress Alliance.

New CIC trustees include:

·        Minor Insurance, Village Sleep Center, Lamplight Communities, KMC Corporation, Ambulance Service Inc., Shorac Funeral Home, Bates Amusement, Key Market Radio and Valley Radio Advertising.

“We are honored that these area businesses have decided to support the CIC, the work being done by Progress Alliance and the ongoing effort to build a better Jefferson County,” said Ed Looman, executive director of Progress Alliance. “These businesses along with our existing trustees deserve public praise for their financial commitment to our organization and the future of our county.”

Second regional forum scheduled

The second Regional Economic Outlook Forum, sponsored by Progress Alliance, the Downtown Weirton Business Association and the Business Development Corporation of the Northern Panhandle, will be held in early November.

More details will be announced once an exact date and location are determined. The first event drew a large crowd to Weirton’s Millsop Community Center in 2008.
